Why Cape Town? part 2
Thursday, May 21st, 2009Why Cape Town?
Tuesday, May 19th, 2009First of all, I did not have any luck purchasing anymore tickets. My application for three additional games was rejected at the price I wanted. I may try again in a few weeks to purchase tickets again, but it will be a high price ticket.
There are three main reasons why I chose Cape Town as the “base of operations” for our World Cup 2010 experience. First of all Cape Town has a population of 3.1 million people compared to Johannesburg, which has a population of 10.5 million people. Escaping the hustle and bustle of a very big metropolitan city and being able to find some room to relax is very important. Secondly my sister has a few friends that she went to college with that are from Cape Town and their knowledge of the area has been very helpful in the preplanning of our trip. Lastly, there are plenty of fun and interesting things to do in Cape Town. I have put together a Top 10 Ten List of places to visit in Cape Town with the help of the Internet and Lonely Planet’s South Africa guidebook.
Cape Town Top Ten List (In No Particular Order)
1.Table Mountain National Park and Table Mountain Aerial Cableway -offers spectacular views of the cape from the summit.
2. Robben Island and Nelson Mandela Gateway - “From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa of the price paid for freedom.”
3.District Six Museum - “Originally established as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, laborers and immigrants, District Six was a vibrant centre with close links to the city and the port.”
4.Castle of Good Hope - Capt Town’s oldest building
5.Bo-Kaap Museum -Brightly colored neighborhood made up mostly of descendents of East Indian slaves brought over the by the Dutch
7.Victoria and Albert Waterfront - Shopping, food, and entertainment!
10.Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - World-renowned for the beauty and diversity of the Cape flora it displays and for the magnificence of its setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.
